Helen Malgas

Counselling Psychologist

Helen has 18 years of experience working as a Counselling Psychologist. She came to Counselling Psychology later in her life following a career in Human Resources Management in the corporate sector. The change to psychology was prompted by a deep desire to support peoples’ growth and development in a more meaningful way. In 2002 she decided to pursue her postgraduate studies in Psychology at the university of Stellenbosch. She was awarded her Masters in Counselling Psychology (cum laude).

During her internship Helen was placed at a variety of organisations in Cape Town. These included the outpatients psychiatric department at Victoria Hospital, the AIDS Training Information and Counselling Centre (ATICC), and two schools. This afforded her the opportunity to gain a wide variety of clinical experience across a range of clients.

In addition to running her private practice in Plumstead, Helen has worked in variety of settings including public and private higher education, public health, and the corporate sector. Helen is passionate about seeing people develop their potential and sees psychology as having a role to play in this process. Helen’s work is influenced largely by Narrative Therapy. She sees her role as one of walking alongside people and supporting them to make meaning of their lives and the challenges that they may be experiencing.

Helen particularly enjoys working with adolescents and young adults. She appreciates the energy and creativity that this age group offers in the counselling space. Her passion for working with adolescents prompted her to pursue her Doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychology at the University of Free State. She is currently in the process of completing her dissertation.

Helen also consults with adults as well as couples and families.

On a more personal note, Helen is married and has two teenage children. She lives in Plumstead along with a menagerie of pets.
